Getting started

How do I connect my phone and scanner?

The Scanner and the phone are connected via Bluetooth. Start your scanner first to begin the connection. You will see that the blue light of the Bluetooth symbol starts blinking, this indicates that the scanner is ready to connect to device.

Navigate to the Account tab in your application. There you will find the 'Device Settings menu'. Tap ‘Device Settings’ if you want to connect to a (new) scanner.

Select the option ‘Search for devices’ to find your scanner. You will see the ID of your scanner in the list. If you own multiple scanners then you can identify your scanner via the sticker on the side of the scanner, as shown on the picture. Tap the correct ID to pair the scanner with your phone.

It is possible that the application doesn’t locate the scanner. This probably means that the Bluetooth settings on your phone are off. Navigate to your phones Bluetooth settings (these can be different for different types of phones), activate Bluetooth and connect to the scanner. Then you can return to the application and connect the application and the phone.

How do I register and get a license key?

1. Get your license key

In order to work with the NutriOpt on-site Adviser, your Trouw Nutrition representative needs to provide you a license key to activate the app. You can find your Trouw Nutrition representative here

When you log in the mobile app for the first time, you will get a message on your screen requesting you to enter a product key. Please, click the Yes button and type the license key which was given to you by your Trouw Nutrition representative. Your subscription will be immediately activated.

Activate Notes:

  • It is required to have a valid license key before you can use the scanner.
  • One license key is valid for one user account
  • If a registered user has three license keys (for example) and he/she wants to share two license keys with two users, the two users can immediately register in the mobile app and activate their respective licenses

2. Enter your NutriOpt credentials

The mobile application needs to be linked to the NutriOpt nutritional database in order to get your results. You can do this by clicking “Account”, scrolling down and clicking “NutriOpt Credentials”. This opens a menu where you can insert the NutriOpt credential information given to you by your Trouw Nutrition contact person.

How do I scan a sample?

Select the ‘Scan’ menu in order to start your scanning process. The ‘Scan’ menu can also be accessed via the client and field data. The device is ready for a scan when the scan (green),
battery (yellow/green) and Bluetooth (blue) lights are continuously on.
The app always indicates which scan is needed; to calibrate, a white background or yellow background scan will appear (for more information on how to calibrate, see ‘Calibration process’). When the scan has been finalized, an ‘OK’ symbol will be displayed in the scanning step, and your phone will vibrate (if this is switched on in your settings), see picture below.

1. Calibration process

The calibration screen will be displayed once the scanner is correctly connected.

1.1 White background scan using the calibration cap:

  • Before each order, a white-background calibration needs to be performed with the calibration cap.
  • Check that the sensor head is clean. If necessary, clean it with the brush and/or tissues provided.
  • When the scanner is clean, place it in the calibration cap facing the white side. Make sure the pins of the scanner connect perfectly with the holes of the calibration cap. The scanner head needs to be in contact with the white surface.
  • Start the scanning process by pressing the ‘Scan’ button on the device for one second.
  • The white calibration process will take about 40 seconds.

If the background scanning has not been successful, an error message will appear in the app. Follow the instructions to resolve the issue. If the issue persists, please contact support.

1.2 Yellow standard scan with the calibration cap:

  • At the beginning of each working day, or when you connect your app to another device, a yellow standard sample needs to be calibrated using the yellow background calibration cap.
  • Turn the calibration cap with the yellow side facing upwards, and position the sensor pins inside the holes of the calibration cap. The scanner head needs to be in contact with the yellow surface of the calibration cap.
  • Start the scanning process by pressing the ‘Scan’ button on the device for one second.
  • The yellow calibration process will take 30 seconds.

If the scanning of the standard sample has not been successful, an error message will appear in the app. Follow the instructions to resolve the issue. If the issue persists, please contact support.

When the calibration process has finished, you will be redirected automatically to the sample scanning process.

2. Eight steps to scan a sample

A sample must be prepared before you can start scanning. Prepare a big enough sample to represent your testing area. In total, five scans are required to provide an accurate measurement of your sample.

  1. Mix your sample well before filling the sample tray up to the edge. If scanning a silage sample, fill a large tray (approx. 40x60cm).
  2. Place the scanner on top of your sample. Make sure the scanning surface of the sensor/ scanner head is in contact with your sample.
  3. Press the ‘Scan’ button for one second to start the scanning process. Do not move the scanner while it is scanning or while the scan (green) light is blinking.
  4. Your mobile device will notify you when you can continue to the next scan.
  5. When the scan is finished, place the contained sample back into your bucket. Mix it thoroughly, fill a new sample tray and repeat the process. In case of silage you can position the scanner on a different place in the tray.
  6. Before each scan you have to clean the sensor/ scanner head. Continue to repeat step 1 to 5 until all required 5 valid scans are finalised. Follow the process in the app to generate a report.
  7. Clean the scanner properly before placing it back in the case.
  8. Implement your findings.

3. Cleaning the scanner after use

The scanner is a Near Infra Red (NIR) measuring device. You must take good care of your sensor/scanner head to ensure its proper operation. After each silage scan, keep the bottom and glass parts of the scanner clean by using the brush and the dry cleaning cloth. The glass surface of the handheld scanner needs to be cleaned using wet wipes (EtOH).
