The value of technical support

Insalcor’s customers are mainly dairy and beef farmers (feedlot and range), but also feed mills and pig and poultry farms. "Sales, technical support, and advice are closely linked in our business,” explains Gustavo Viera, technical and commercial consultant at Insalcor. “The use of accurate data and proof is key here." Mr Viera and his team are therefore using the NutriOpt On-Site Adviser from Trouw Nutrition. The NutriOpt On-site Adviser combines a hand-held NIR scanner, a mobile application and a connection to NutriOpt's Nutritional Database. Samples of feed ingredients can be measured on the spot, and the insights help farmers optimise their rations.

Boosting milk output and quality

The Uruguayan dairy industry has enjoyed dynamic growth during the past 35 years and has become more competitive and professional throughout this time. To maintain its strong position in the global dairy market, cost reductions and high productivity per cow are important. "To increase milk production and milk quality on our farms in Uruguay, we need to further optimise the rations and improve the quality and availability of forage," explains Mr Viera. “This starts with real-time, accurate data on the nutritional values of the forages, grains, by-products, and other possible ingredients we use in our ruminant diets.” After scanning the samples, the hand-held scanner sends all data to the mobile application, which creates a nutritional report of the scanned raw material using the NutriOpt calibration lines and its nutritional database. Mr Viera: “A balanced feed ration is key to reaching higher milk production per cow. Before we had the On-Site Adviser, we collected and sent the samples to a laboratory in the USA. Now, having the results in ten minutes saves us a lot of time and costs.”

Better feed formulation

The use of the NutriOpt On-site Adviser has changed the way Insalcor provides technical support and advice to its dairy farmers. Mr Viera: “The use of this mobile feed-testing solution is very simple and fast, which provides an important competitive advantage in our daily work. This new type of technology really helps us to better formulate ruminant diets and achieve a good total mixed ration (TMR), based on the available feed ingredients and forages on the farm. The power lies in having the nutritional data at our fingertips, so we can also see the differences in silages coming from different harvests of corn.” Insalcor will be using the NutriOpt On-site Adviser even more in the near future and will add more scanners to its technical support toolbox for dairy farmers in Uruguay, helping them to increase milk production and quality while reducing feed costs.
